Who I Am Matters
My name is Baylor Adams, an adventure-seeking outdoors guy from the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically Marin County. I'm from a small family, being an only child, and consider my parents some of my closest friends.
I'm going where life takes me, always meeting new people and trying different things. I'm going to be living in New York next year working in the real estate industry, a passion that I've had my whole life and love sharing with my friends. I hope to create my own real estate investment firm someday, hopefully after graduate school and a few leading firms to show me how to succeed. I don't really have a solid plan right now, other than that I'm going to study for my first job as I would for a test and hopefully create a solid foundation for my career. Again, I'm going where life takes me and hopefully will create some solid connections along the way.
My parents and I are very similar; however, I hope I'm not as stubborn as they can be sometimes. My mother immigrated to the US from Norway when she was a teenager and my father grew up in a big middle-class family in inland Orange County. I'm not an immigrant and I'm lucky to have a better foundation than my dad did growing up. We share similar interests - skiing (from my mother), real estate (a new shared interest I have with my dad), hiking, traveling, and reading.
I would consider myself to be more friendly with the outdoors than my parents. Both of them were not as comfortable outdoors and have become more so while raising me, hoping that I would be more comfortable than they are. I'm also more social than my parents are and were in their day; I live off of other people and can only be alone if it's to study or work.
For a long time, I was operating under my parents' expectations. A lot of that changed when I got to USC and realized all of the reasons I fit in and don't fit in here, which has driven my interest to start my own firm when I'm older. I'm always comparing myself to others, which at this school can often be dangerous, but has lit a fire within me to work super hard in life.
I have a handful of family friends that I admire and use as mentors to help with my college and life decisions. One of them turned me on to real estate and another always reminds me that I have to enjoy life along the way - both are great perspectives I try to have.
When I went to camp as a kid I received my animal, the ring-tailed lemur. As I get older it makes more sense and I laugh at it, but I love the curious, rambunctious nature of lemurs and often feel connected to that.
I loved trees as a kid. I was always climbing trees and fell out of a 30-foot tree when I was 10. I lost consciousness when I hit the ground, miraculously ended up ok, but didn't tell my parents about it worrying that they wouldn't let me climb trees anymore. I have a lot of respect for trees, I feel like they can understand us and communicate with each other. One of my favorite films is Patagonia's Treeline.
My sun sign is 9 degrees Libra, moon is 15 degrees cancer, and rising sign is 10 degrees scorpio. Reading through it now and it sounds very accurate.
Thanks for sharing! It was great getting to learn a little bit more about who you are. I also used to love climbing trees.
ReplyDeleteYou must be excited to move to New York after graduation -- I am moving to the city too and I can't wait! Hopefully the world will be more back to normal by then so that we can enjoy it. I love that you chose a lemur as your animal. Back when going to zoos was cool, I always thought the lemurs were so funny. My little brother was terrified by them for some unknown reason...
ReplyDeleteHi Baylor, looking forward to being in class with you again! I love how open you are to whatever life throws at you. It is so exciting that you starting to work towards your ultimate career goal upon graduating in the spring. I am also a big fan of lemurs: I loved the show Zaboomafoo when I was younger.

Hey Baylor! I've thought about getting into the real estate industry as well. Not having a solid plan makes any endeavor all the more exciting, so I'm sure everything will work out for you. I can definitely relate to you in the sense that it can be tempting to compare yourself to others at USC, and I also find it super motivating being surrounded by so many incredible people. Wishing you the best of luck in New York! -Andrew Piazza
ReplyDeleteBaylor,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog! Are there are a lot of great hiking spots in Marin? I grew up in Seattle so I love hiking and really resonate with that. Lemurs are amazing animals by the way, awesome spirit animal. I'm looking forward to class with you.
